History

Albuquerque churchOne of the oldest cities in America, Albuquerque has one of the richest histories, dating back to the original Native American inhabitants. Founded as a Spanish Colonial outpost in 1706, modern day Albuquerque holds onto much of its Spanish history. A farming community as well as being a strategically placed military outpost, by 1821, Mexico also had a military garrison there. Built in the traditional Spanish village pattern, a central plaza, surrounded by government buildings, churches and homes, the central plaza has been preserved through the years and is open to the public, becoming known as “Old Town Albuquerque” and a major tourist attraction.

By 1880, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad had arrived, bypassing the Plaza, placing its depot about two miles east in what became New Albuquerque. By 1900, Albuquerque had grown to 8,000 and joined the modern age with electric streets lights and other amenities. The dry air brought travelers to Albuquerque for health reasons around 1926, motels, restaurants and gift shops had been built. The famous Route 66 originally ran through the city. The construction of Kirtland Air force Base in 1939, Sandia Base in the 1940’s and the Sandia National Laboratories in 1949 made Albuquerque a key player in the Atomic Age.
