History

The area has a long and rich history, dating back to the Spanish colonial settlers of the late 1700s. The remains of a walled village from this time can still be found. When Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, Mexican authorities advised the settlers to move for their own protection (they returned by the late 1830s). Around 1840, the present Village of Placitas was established with its own spring-fed irrigation system which still supplies water. Placitas is home to the descendants of that land grant who continue to protect the environment and culture. Placitas was also a counterculture center in the 1970s, and now thrives with more upscale residents seeking a scenic non-urban setting close to Albuquerque.
