A farming community as well as being a strategically placed military outpost, by 1821, Mexico also had a military garrison there. Built in the traditional Spanish village pattern, a central plaza, surrounded by government buildings, churches and homes, the central plaza has been preserved through the years and is open to the public, becoming known as “Old Town Albuquerque” and a major tourist attraction.
The dry air brought travelers to Albuquerque for health reasons around 1926 and before long, motels, restaurants and gift shops had been built. The famous Route 66 originally ran through the city on a north-south alignment and today, the majority of the surviving structures from Route 66 are on Central Avenue.
