Albuquerque Area Information

General Information

Sitting in the central part of the state is Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico. The county seat of Bernalillo, this picturesque city has a population of over 500,000, ranking at number 34th in size in the United States. Home to Kirtland Air Force Base as well the University of New Mexico, and Petroglyph National Monument. To the east, sit the Sandia Mountains, a view that can take your breath away.

One of the oldest cities in America, Albuquerque has one of the richest histories, dating back to the original Native American inhabitants. More recently, Albuquerque has worked hard, earning recognition as one of the best places to work and live and do business. Lower prices for land and lower taxes have helped the metropolitan area as well as outside the city. Downtown Albuquerque has also shown its urban character, through construction of new loft apartment buildings and the renovation and refurbishment of local icons and historic buildings such as the KiMo Theater.
With so much to see and do, great places to live and work, Albuquerque is just the place for you if you love friendly people, a great working environment and a wonderful place to raise a family!

History

Founded as a Spanish Colonial outpost in 1706, modern day Albuquerque holds onto much of its Spanish history. A farming community as well as being a strategically placed military outpost, by 1821, Mexico also had a military garrison there. Built in the traditional Spanish village pattern, a central plaza, surrounded by government buildings, churches and homes, the central plaza has been preserved through the years and is open to the public, becoming known as “Old Town Albuquerque” and a major tourist attraction.

By 1880, the Atchison, Topeka and SantaFe Railroad had arrived, bypassing the Plaza, placing its depot about two miles east in what became New Albuquerque. Incorporated as a town in 1885, it quickly grew and became incorporated as a city in 1891. Until the 1920’s, “Old Town” remained a separate entity, but was eventually absorbed into “New Albuquerque. By 1900, Albuquerque had grown to 8,000 and joined the modern age with electric streets lights and other amenities and in 1902, the famous Alvarado Hotel was built where it remained until 1970 when this piece of history was torn down to make room for a parking lot. In 2002, the Alvarado Transportation Center brought back the memory of the hotel, erecting a building that resembled the landmark. The station functions as the downtown headquarters for the city’s transit department as well as a hub for local buses and trains.

The dry air brought travelers to Albuquerque for health reasons around 1926 and before long, motels, restaurants and gift shops had been built. The famous Route 66 originally ran through the city on a north-south alignment and today, the majority of the surviving structures from Route 66 are on Central Avenue.
The construction of Kirtland Air force Base in 1939, Sandia Base in the 1940’s and the Sandia National Laboratories in 1949 made Albuquerque a key player in the Atomic Age and today, it has become a popular destination for travelers, vacationers and business people alike.
