Bernalillo County History and Structure

Dividing counties in New Mexico can be traced back to the time of Mexican rule, 1837 to be exact, when two districts were created. In 1844, New Mexico was re-divided into three districts which were then even further subdivided into areas that are actually very similar to today’s county. In 1912, when New Mexico joined the Union, the law making power of the state was vested in the legislature. Bernalillo County gains its power from the state’s constitution, with counties subject to the will of the legislature. Bernalillo County has a Commission/Manager form of government that delegates most of the day to day activities to the County Manager, with the county employing 1500 full and part time employees.
