Founded as part of the Alameda Grant, Rio Rancho was founded by the Spanish in 1710. By the early part of the 20 th century, a great deal of the original land grand had been sold to various land investment companies, such as Amrep Corp, who purchased 55,000 in 1961 and developed the land into Rio Rancho Estates, moving in the first families in the sixties. With the population growing tenfold between 1970 and 1980, Rio Rancho incorporated in 1981, and the opening of Intel Corporation had a major impact on the city. Beginning in the 1990’s, Rio Rancho has moved towards more independence from Albuquerque, establishing separate school and libraries and making concerted efforts to attract businesses to the area.
